Classical chroma keying picks a target colour (typically a specific green) and makes every pixel within a tolerance of that colour transparent. It works well when the green is uniformly lit and the subject contains no green. It struggles when the green has lighting variation (the corners of the screen are darker than the middle), when the subject has any green in it (clothing, accessories, eyes), or when light spill from the green screen has tinted parts of the subject. Manual cleanup involves tweaking tolerance, smoothing edges, and despill-correcting the subject.
Neural segmentation does not look for green specifically. It looks for the subject. The model has been trained on millions of images of people, products, and objects against various backgrounds — including green screens — and learns to identify the subject regardless of background colour.
