Two flavors of GIF and how each becomes a PDF

GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) was created by CompuServe in 1987 and has remained popular despite many newer formats because of one feature: built-in animation. A single GIF file can hold a sequence of frames with timing information, played back as a loop by every browser and image viewer. For static images GIF is limited to 256 colors with LZW compression, making it inferior to PNG for most modern use cases, but for animations GIF survives because of its universal support. Converting GIF to PDF means handling both flavors: a static GIF becomes a single-page PDF, an animated GIF becomes a multi-page PDF with one frame per page.

FixTools parses GIF files by reading the GIF87a or GIF89a header, the logical screen descriptor with screen dimensions and color palette, and then the sequence of image blocks (graphic control extensions, image descriptors, LZW-compressed pixel data). Each frame is decoded into a raw RGBA buffer, with the disposal method correctly applied so that frames that build on previous frames render in the right composited state. Each frame is then embedded into the PDF as a FlateDecode stream, producing one page per frame in animation order.

For static GIFs the result is a single-page PDF that opens in every reader. For animated GIFs the multi-page PDF captures every frame as a still image, which lets the recipient scroll through the animation manually. This is the right behaviour for PDF because PDF does not portably support animation; embedded media in PDF works in some readers and fails in others, so the safest approach is to render every animation frame as a separate page.

A common use case is converting a screen recording GIF (created with tools like LICEcap or Kap) into a PDF for a bug report or tutorial. The frame-by-frame PDF lets reviewers step through the UI sequence at their own pace, which is often more useful for technical review than a playing animation. Sample long animations to keep the PDF manageable

A five-second animated GIF at 30 frames per second is 150 frames, which produces a 150-page PDF. For visual review this is often more pages than needed. Use a GIF editor to keep every third or fifth frame before converting, producing a tidier PDF that still captures the animation arc.

Preserve frame timing as PDF metadata

PDF does not natively support animation timing, but you can add a small caption to each page with the frame timestamp using a post-processing PDF tool. FixTools itself does not add captions, but the conversion preserves the frame order, so any later annotation step has the right ordering.
