Why a heavy PDF slows your page down

When a browser loads a PDF embedded in a page, it has to read the file structure before it can paint anything on screen. A PDF exported from a design tool often ships with several megabytes of overhead that has nothing to do with what the reader sees: subsetted fonts that were never trimmed, the same logo stored as a separate image on every page, and a tangle of object references that grew as the document was edited. All of it has to be transferred and parsed first.

Structural optimization attacks that overhead directly. FixTools rebuilds the PDF so shared resources are referenced once instead of duplicated, unused objects are dropped, and the cross reference table is written cleanly. The visible pages are identical, but the file the browser has to download and parse is smaller and simpler, so the first page appears sooner. This is the opposite of a quality tradeoff, because none of the actual content is altered.

There is a limit to what lossless optimization can do. If your PDF is large mainly because it contains high resolution photographs or scanned pages, the images themselves are the weight, and structural cleanup will only shave a little off. In that case run the file through the PDF Compressor, which resamples and re-encodes the images to cut size much further, accepting a small quality tradeoff that is usually invisible on screen.
