Most tools that make a PDF smaller do it by throwing quality away.
Loading Optimize PDF…
Lossless: images and text are never resampled or re-encoded
Cuts size by removing unused resources and duplicate objects
Layout, fonts, and page content stay pixel identical
Encrypted upload, files auto-deleted after processing

A PDF stores two very different things: the content you can see, which is the text, images, and vector graphics on each page, and the structure that holds it together, which includes font programs, resource dictionaries, object references, and metadata. Compression tools go after the content, shrinking images by lowering their resolution and quality. Optimization goes after the structure, trimming the parts that add file size without adding anything to what appears on the page.
That distinction is why optimization can be completely lossless. When FixTools removes a font that was embedded but never used, or collapses three identical copies of the same logo into a single shared object, the reader cannot tell, because none of it was ever visible. The saved bytes were pure overhead. What comes out the other side is the same document with a tidier internal filing system, which is exactly what you want for a legal record, an archival scan, a print ready proof, or any file where fidelity matters more than getting the smallest possible number.
The honest limit is that lossless optimization cannot match the raw size reduction of compression on image heavy files, because it refuses to touch the images that make up most of the weight. If you have a scanned document or a photo book and you need it dramatically smaller, compression is the tool, and a modest, well judged quality tradeoff will often be invisible on screen. But when the answer to that tradeoff is no, lossless optimization is how you still make the file smaller.
Upload the PDF and run Optimize PDF for a lossless cleanup. The download looks identical to the original but carries less structural overhead. For a bigger, lossy reduction, use the PDF Compressor instead.
Step-by-step guide to optimize a pdf without losing quality:
Open the Optimize PDF tool
Launch FixTools Optimize PDF in your browser. There is nothing to install and no account to create.
Upload your PDF
Drag the file onto the upload area or pick it from your device. It is sent over an encrypted connection.
Run the lossless optimizer
Click Optimize PDF. The tool removes unused resources, duplicate objects, and stale metadata without altering a single image or character.
Confirm the result looks identical
Preview the optimized file. Every page should look exactly like the original, because nothing visible was changed.
Download the optimized file
Save the leaner PDF. The processed copy is deleted from our servers automatically once your download starts.
Common situations where this approach makes a real difference:
Legal filing
A paralegal must reduce a court exhibit PDF for an e-filing system but cannot risk any loss of legibility on the scanned evidence. Lossless optimization trims the file while leaving every scanned page exactly as captured.
Print ready proof
A prepress operator hands a proof to a printer and needs it smaller for transfer without altering the high resolution artwork. Optimizing removes duplicated resources while the print images stay untouched.
Archival record
A records officer digitizes contracts for long term storage and needs faithful copies. Optimization slims each file for the archive without degrading the originals.
Photography portfolio
A photographer sends a portfolio PDF where image quality is the entire point. Lossless optimization tidies the file structure while leaving every photo at full fidelity.
Get better results with these expert suggestions:
Use this when quality is non-negotiable
For legal, print, medical, or archival documents, lossless optimization is the safe choice because it physically cannot alter the visible content.
Do not expect compressor-level shrinkage
If a file barely gets smaller, its weight is in the images, which this tool protects. That is working as intended, not a failure.
Chain it after merging or editing
Merging and editing tools can leave behind orphaned resources. Running a lossless pass afterward cleans up that residue for free.
Keep a compressed variant for casual sharing
Keep the lossless file as your master, and make a compressed copy only when you need a tiny file for a quick, low stakes share.
