Why scanners jumble page order, and how to fix it cleanly
Automatic document feeders and duplex scanning are the usual culprits. A feeder can grab two sheets at once or pull them at a slight skew, changing the order it captures them in. Duplex scanners that image both sides in one pass sometimes write the back of a page before the next front, so the sequence interleaves incorrectly. And when you notice a missing page and feed it again, most scanners append it to the end rather than slotting it where it belongs.
Rescanning the whole stack to fix this is slow and risks the same problem again. Reordering the existing PDF is faster and cannot damage the scan, because the pages are simply copied into a new document in the order you set. Nothing is re-imaged or re-compressed, so the corrected file is pixel-for-pixel the same scan, just in the right sequence. For a mixed-up duplex scan, move each back page next to its matching front until the document reads correctly.
