Extract Text From a Research Paper PDF

Academic PDFs are dense, and getting a clean quote or a reference out of one by dragging in a reader is painful, especially with two-column journal layouts where the selection jumps between columns. FixTools reads the whole paper at once. Upload the PDF, and the selectable text is pulled from every page into a box, so you can copy an exact passage to quote, lift a citation for your bibliography, or grab an abstract to paste into your notes. It reads the real text layer stored in the file, so the words come out exactly as the authors wrote them, which matters when you are quoting precisely. Because pdf.js runs locally in your browser, the paper is never uploaded, so an unpublished manuscript or a paywalled article you are working with stays on your device. Most journal PDFs are digital and read cleanly. Older scanned papers are images with no text layer and need OCR, which the tool will flag if the result comes up empty.

Quoting accurately from a journal PDF

When you quote from a paper, the wording has to be exact, and a two-column journal layout makes hand selection risky. Dragging across the page can pull the left and right columns interleaved, or grab a footnote in the middle of a sentence, and fixing that by hand is where transcription errors creep in. Reading the text layer gives you the authors words in order so you can copy a passage cleanly.

The same applies to references. Copying a citation from the bibliography rather than retyping it avoids the small mistakes, a wrong page number or a dropped initial, that make a reference hard to trace. Pull the entry straight from the extracted text and drop it into your reference manager or document.

One caveat for older material. Papers scanned from print have no text layer, so nothing extracts and the box comes up empty. Those need OCR to turn the page images into text, and the tool will point you to the OCR PDF tool when it detects a scan.

How to use this tool

💡

Upload the research paper PDF and the full text extracts into a box. Copy the exact passage or reference you need, or download the whole paper as a .txt file for your notes.

How It Works

Step-by-step guide to extract text from a research paper pdf:

  1. 1

Open the PDF to Text tool

Launch FixTools PDF to Text in your browser. There is nothing to install.

  2. 2

    Upload the paper

Select the research paper PDF from your device. The file loads into the browser, not to a server.

  3. 3

    Extract the full text

The tool reads the selectable text from every page with pdf.js and shows the whole paper in a box.

  4. 4

    Copy what you need

Select the exact quote, citation, or abstract in the box and copy it, or use Copy text for the whole paper.

  5. 5

    Save for reference

Optionally click Download .txt to keep a plain text copy of the paper alongside your notes.

Real-world examples

Common situations where this approach makes a real difference:

Quoting a passage

A graduate student copies an exact sentence from a journal article to quote in a literature review.

Building a bibliography

A researcher lifts citations straight from the references section instead of retyping them into a reference manager.

Grabbing an abstract

A reviewer copies the abstract of a paper into their notes to summarise a batch of readings.

Unpublished manuscript

An author working with a draft that is not public keeps it on their device by using a tool that does not upload the file.

Pro tips

Get better results with these expert suggestions:

1

Select just the passage

Highlight only the sentence or paragraph you want in the box before copying, so you quote exactly the right text.

2

Watch two-column order

On heavy two-column pages, skim the extracted text to confirm the columns did not interleave before you quote.

3

Copy references verbatim

Pull citations from the extracted text rather than retyping them to avoid page-number and spelling slips.

4

Old scan? Use OCR

If a paper predates digital typesetting and nothing extracts, run it through the OCR PDF tool first.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Upload the paper to FixTools PDF to Text. It reads every page into a box, so you can copy an exact quote, a citation, or the whole paper.
It reads the text layer from every page. Most papers extract cleanly, though very complex columns can shift word order, so skim before quoting.
Yes. It reads the real characters stored in the file, so quoted passages match what the authors wrote.
No. pdf.js reads the file in your browser, so an unpublished or paywalled paper stays on your device.
Yes. Select the references section in the extracted text and copy it, or copy the whole paper and pull citations from it.
The paper is probably a scan of a printed article, so it has no text layer. Use the OCR PDF tool to recognise the words.
No. The output is plain text, so columns, figures, and equations are not preserved. You get the words in reading order.
Yes, with no account and no per-file charge, and no watermark.
Yes. Click Download .txt to keep a plain text copy of the full paper.
No. Figures are images and are skipped, and equations may extract as loose characters, since only the text layer is read.
